As customers finalize their holiday shopping, Starbucks anticipates the busiest day for purchases of Starbucks Cards on December 23, citing the perennial popularity of gift cards as one of the most popular gifts during the holiday season. Last year, more than 46 million Starbucks Cards, which includes both physical and digital cards, were purchased in the U.S. and Canada during the holiday season. Starbucks projects that nearly $3 billion will be loaded onto Starbucks Cards from October to December this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“For more than 20 years, Starbucks Cards have made the perfect gift for loved ones during the holiday season, and we’re on track for another record performance of Starbucks Card sales. We are predicting that December 23 will be our busiest day of the year for Starbucks Card sales as customers finalize their holiday gifting,” said Starbucks chief marketing officer Brady Brewer.

According to the <a href="https://nrf.com/media-center/press-releases/thanksgiving-weekend-see-more-holiday-shoppers-last-year-and-consumers">National Retail Federation</a>, 46% of shoppers plan to buy gift cards this holiday season, making it the second most popular gift. Moreover, gift card sales are expected to total $28.1 billion this holiday season as shoppers plan to buy three or four cards, spending an average of $48.92 per card.

Starbucks first gift cards debuted in stores in November 2001, and although gift cards had been available at Starbucks since 1994 as an alternative to paper gift certificates, Starbucks was among the first major retailers to offer a reloadable card. In 2001, Starbucks Cards became one of the most popular holiday gifts of the season, selling nearly 200,000 in the first week alone. For just a few dollars, customers could give a meaningful gift to loved ones, and the cards helped spread the word about Starbucks as its number of stores grew from more than 4,700 in 2001 to more than 33,000 stores today.

More than 1,500 Starbucks Card designs have been released over the 20 years of the program. Today, Starbucks Cards are available in a variety of designs in both physical and digital formats and can be loaded with $5 to $100. Physical Starbucks Cards are available year-round in dozens of designs at Starbucks stores in more than 40 countries around the world. They are also available in more than 100,000 locations outside Starbucks stores, including grocery stores and other retailers.

For as long as she can remember, Fiona Reed, has had a mission to give back. A passion instilled in her by her grandmother, a pastry chef, who despite having little to spare, would often bake cakes and bread to bring to families in need during the Second World War.

“We were very close and giving back to the community was something she had always done,” says Fiona.

All year long, Starbucks partners like Fiona, create inspiring moments, uplifting their communities and sparking joy in big and small ways. But, for the past several weeks, her district has been participating in Season of Cheer, a special time of year when partners across the country join forces to make spirits even brighter during the holidays.

“It is so needed in our communities. With the challenges of homelessness, hunger, poverty and loneliness, it is so important we spread hope and cheer wherever we can.” says Fiona.

Over the years, Fiona has connected with many local charities, including seniors’ organizations like the Coleman Care Centre and Senior’s Wish Association, to help uplift the city’s most vulnerable citizens, which through the pandemic has been needed more than ever.

Armed with coffee, hot chocolate, dozens of homemade gingerbread cookies, and a small team of partners, Fiona spent one afternoon this month at the Coleman Care Centre, decorating cookies with seniors.

A relationship that began in 2019 when Fiona and a few Starbucks partners visited the centre to enjoy coffee and sing Christmas carols with the residents, the residents at the Coleman Care Centre now look forward to visits from their local friends at Starbucks. “This past summer, when the residents heard that Starbucks partners were coming in to spend more time with them, they were so excited to find out what activities we would be doing,” says Karen Andrews, Director of Recreation, Coleman Care Centre. &nbsp;“The smiles I see on both the partners and residents faces often brings me to tears. Community partners coming in and spending time with the residents in a meaningful way is truly valuable, and the residents reminisce for days after the fun they had interacting with such lovely people.”

Karen describes the impact as valuable and everlasting, and one that it goes both ways. “The residents are able to pass on valuable wisdom through conversation with the partners,” she says. “We are always grateful for any type of donation that is provided to the residents, but the donation of one’s time, you just can’t put a value on that.”

For the Senior’s Wish Association, the team helped put together over a thousand bags over the past few years for the adopt a senior program for the holidays, this year, donating 150 packages of cookies to include in the care packages. This year, store managers met with senior volunteers and helped wrap gifts and to celebrate the seniors who volunteer with the organization.

A teacher and coach at heart, with two children in their 20s, Fiona describes what it means to work with partners around the same age as her children and why she works to instill a passion for community with each one she connects with.

“What better way to continue that inspiration than through this next set of leaders. When I'm a senior citizen years from now, they're going to be the leaders in my place. I want them to have that foundation to keep going, to support the community and non-profit groups locally and globally,” says Fiona.

To encourage the partners in her store, the team hosts daily coffee tasting meetings where partners have the opportunity to introduce a community group, who they serve and how the team can help now or in the future.

“On several occasions the partners have asked me about what's happening with Senior Wish and how our Christmas campaign has been going. This interest and enthusiasm is due to Fiona and her leadership. We can't thank her enough, not only for her ongoing support but for inspiring a new generation of volunteers and community minded individuals," says Suzanne.

Working with her team and district, Fiona plans many more ways to give back through Season of Cheer and year-round, continuing to live up to her mission of giving back at Starbucks.

“I had always joked with friends that I just wanted to be a barista at Starbucks, they look like they have so much fun, and they get to talk to people,” Fiona recalls. But, it was the company’s&nbsp; mission, To inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time, that most attracted her to the company “After researching more about the company’s community and global initiatives like C.A.F.E. practices, work with women in coffee and tea growing regions around the world, and more, I knew that this is where I wanted to be.”

“I want to make sure that somebody's day is better. Somebody's life is better. I want to make sure that I have my eyes and ears open so I can see and hear what's going on in my community and around the world. And I want to inspire others around me to be that change as well.”

As Starbucks celebrates its <a href="http://stories.starbucks.com/fifty">50th anniversary</a> this year, we take a look back at one of its most beloved coffees, Starbucks Christmas Blend.

Before Peppermint Mocha, before red holiday cups – there was Christmas Blend. This beloved holiday coffee was Introduced in 1984, back when Starbucks had only five locations in Seattle and they didn’t sell drinks and food, just whole bean coffee, tea and spices. The new coffee blend showcased Starbucks artistry in roasting and blending with an expert combination of lively Latin American beans and mellow Indonesian coffees. The finishing touch was the addition of rare, spicy Sumatra beans that were painstakingly aged for three to five years for a full-bodied, spicy and rich cup of coffee.

Customers quickly snapped up the hand-scooped bags of Christmas Blend, and the air in stores was soon filled with the roasty-sweet aroma of Christmas Blend. The roasting plant ramped up production, as more and more shipments arrived each morning to meet the growing demand, their white metal bins still warm from the fresh-roasted beans inside.

Ever since that very first holiday, Christmas Blend has become a cherished part of the holidays, whether it’s shared around a table or given as a <a href="https://stories.starbucks.ca/en/stories/2021/starbucks-unveils-most-festive-holiday-gifts-coming-this-holiday-season/">perfectly wrapped gift</a>. The Starbucks red holiday cups are back and more festive than ever, with gift-inspired designs that are perfect for sharing.

With shimmering ribbons, a splash of colour and a sprinkle of stars – Starbucks new holiday cups, in four different design variations, are wrapped up like gifts for the holidays. This year’s theme features festive colours of red, green and white with playful touches of lilac. And every cup has a thoughtful gift tag on the back, perfect for sharing a cheerful greeting with a friend or loved one.

“Starbucks red cups are a portal to holiday joy,” said Suzie Reecer, Starbucks associate creative director. “Anytime you're holding the cup, we hope that it's just filling you with the excitement of the season and reconnecting with friends and family.”

A perfectly wrapped gift was the inspiration for this design, featuring a colorful geometric pattern of circles, stripes and stars in the season’s signature shades.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This design evokes a familiar moment of the season, with pieces of ribbon in white and iridescent lilac playfully dancing against a red field of twinkling stars.&nbsp;“The ribbon cup design is inspired by that moment when you just finished wrapping up gifts for your friends and family and look down at the floor to see ribbons all over the place,” Reecer said.

This cup design is like the stars on a clear winter’s night, sparkling holiday lights&nbsp;peek out amid a swirl of ribbons and a jumble of bold, graphic letters that spell out “Starbucks.”

Even if you didn’t grow up with spritz cookies, chances are you’ve seen them at a holiday gathering or cookie exchange. They are the prettiest cookies on the plate. They get their name from the German word spritzen, which means “squirt” and pretty much describes how the cookie is made by squeezing the dough through a cookie press into festive shapes.

These slightly sweet, melt-in-your-mouth treats are the inspiration for Starbucks newest holiday drink, Sugar Cookie Oat Latte. The non-dairy iced beverage is made with sugar cookie flavoured syrup, combined with Starbucks® Blonde Espresso, oat beverage, and topped with red and green cookie sprinkles. It is just as delicious hot, with steamed oat beverage and a cap of foam with sprinkles.

“We wanted to harness the buttery and vanilla notes of the cookie, which you can pick up in the aroma from that first sip from the sugar cookie flavoured syrup and sprinkles,” said Erin Marinan from Starbucks R&amp;D, who led product development with Starbucks partner (employee) Sara Bennett. “It reminds me of making cookies with my mom and sisters growing up. It gives me all the nostalgic feels of the holiday.”

The beverage is the first non-dairy holiday coffee beverage on the Starbucks menu. It joins Irish Cream Cold Brew, which is making its earliest debut on the holiday menu this year, also on Nov. 4. Customers will also find these drinks alongside <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://stories.starbucks.ca/en/stories/2021/fa-la-la-in-love-with-starbucks-holiday-beverages-and-festive-food" target="_blank">seasonal classics</a> Peppermint Mocha, Caramel Brule Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, along with new holiday cups, food items and gifts.

“At this time of year, I always think back to the fun I had baking cookies with my mom and sisters growing up. It’s such a warm memory,” Marinan said. “Everyone seems to have a different recipe they like to make over the holidays, whether it’s to give as a gift to a group of friends or leave out for Santa. “The coffee packaging is always like these little jewels that show up in the store that cue the holidays,” said Jeff Wilkson, creative director for Starbucks, whose team led <a href="https://stories.starbucks.ca/en/stories/2020/the-holiday-season-at-starbucks-starts-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this year’s holiday design</a>. “They are so beautiful and they have a little bit of shine to them.”

When Starbucks first introduced Christmas Blend, it was packed into plain brown paper bags to be brewed at home. But as Starbucks transformed from a whole bean retailer to a coffeehouse, its bags became vessels for visual storytelling starting with decorative adhesive stamps and later with higher tech packaging that uses a printed laminated film, called “­­rollstock,” with a FlavorLock™ seal to help the beans to taste fresh longer. The new rollstock packages offered a larger canvas for sharing each coffee’s unique story through images and words. Christmas Blend could be <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2016/12-years-of-starbucks-christmas-blend/" target="_blank">wrapped as a treasured gift</a> – bedecked with boughs of holly, snow-filled scenes, or shimmering ornaments – along with tasting notes and brewing tips from the blend’s creators.

The artwork for the 2020 Starbucks holiday coffee bag draws from this long and vibrant tradition. Each one distinctive, with traditional reds, greens and gold with highlights of sugar plum and candy pink. They also tie into <a href="https://stories.starbucks.ca/en/stories/2020/the-holiday-season-at-starbucks-starts-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this year’s holiday cup design</a>, with iconography pulled from the ribbon cup – like the Siren’s crown, tail and scales.

The coffees inside the bags are just as beautiful. Inspired by the original flavours of the holiday coffee blends, Starbucks team of expert coffee developers built upon their comfort, tradition, and familiarity while also bringing new coffees from Asia, Africa and Latin America. They also considered brewing methods such as iced and cold brew and savoury pairings as well as sweet.
