Dubbed as the&nbsp;unofficial start of summer, the&nbsp;May long weekend is around the corner, and Canadians are dusting off their gardening tools to start planting outdoors.&nbsp;Starbucks is here to help gardeners show some extra love to their plants and flowers this season, while also helping the environment

Starbucks serves&nbsp;freshly brewed&nbsp;coffee to millions of customers each day, but many may not know they can also pick up a free bag of used coffee grounds to enrich their gardens and compost with its in-store program, Grounds For Your Garden.&nbsp;Starbucks started its Grounds For Your Garden&nbsp;program in 1995, which is offered on a first-come, first-served basis in participating stores for free to customers. Even the packaging has been reused – baristas scoop spent coffee grounds into the empty bags originally used to ship espresso beans to stores.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For over 25 years, customers have taken advantage of Grounds For Your Garden at their local Starbucks. Deepak has been picking up bags of coffee grounds from his local store in Ontario, for his community garden to nourish and prepare his soil for growing fresh produce. His garden, filled with vegetable seeds and fresh greens, was first created to share homegrown food with a few neighbours. Now, he makes his harvest available to help others in the community who face challenges accessing fresh food due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On top of keeping pests&nbsp;away, Deepak shared that the coffee grounds, in combination with his kitchen composter,&nbsp;have helped nourish the soil to produce better greens, including Spinach and Kale, that were most recently harvested for his community members.&nbsp;

Ashley Bonar is the store manager at the Starbucks Deepak regularly visits. Ashley looks forwards to seeing customers take advantage of her location’s Grounds For Your Garden program.

Grounds For Your Garden has evolved to become an important part of Starbucks effort to reduce the environmental impact of its stores. Although composting may not be commercially available in all municipalities, the program serves as another way to reuse coffee&nbsp;grounds to&nbsp;prevent one of the company’s largest waste contributor (by volume and weight) going to landfills. This is just one of the programs that supports the company’s&nbsp;bold, multi-decade aspiration to cut carbon, water and waste each by 50 percent by 2030 and give back to the planet by <a href="https://stories.starbucks.ca/en/stories/2020/starbucks-sustainability-commitment-infographic/">becoming resource positive</a> in the future.

Starbucks Canada confirmed today that company-operated stores in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will move to a “to go” model. Customers will still be able to walk into Starbucks stores and order at the counter, order ahead through the Starbucks App and pick up in store, order at the Drive-Thru, and in select areas can also order Starbucks Delivers powered by Uber Eats. However, all seating will be temporarily paused or removed, including patio and outdoor areas.

The company continues to monitor and adjust operations to best support physical distancing especially if and where positive case counts are elevated. Starbucks Canada is accelerating the transformation of its stores with the launch of Curbside Pickup as customer needs of convenience, connection and personalization continue to evolve and retail landscapes shift as a result of COVID-19. The company will begin testing in 10 stores in Ontario cities starting July 9 and will add 20 additional test locations in Vancouver and the Greater Toronto Area through the summer.

Starbucks Curbside Pickup enables customers to be served in a convenient way that respects physical distancing while maintaining the welcoming third place feeling of personal, human connection.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Powered by the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.ca/en/stories/2020/starbucks-app-evolved-into-a-tool-for-customers-amid-covid-19/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Starbucks App</a>, which is integral to ordering and paying ahead, Starbucks new Curbside Pickup service lets customers order ahead and choose Curbside Pickup at participating stores. Upon arrival, the customer can park in a designated curbside parking spot and check-in using the app. The store will then be notified of the customer’s arrival and a barista will gather their order and deliver it to the customer’s car.&nbsp;

Curbside offers a reduced contact experience to help protect the health and well-being of all customers and partners (employees). Starbucks also has a number of in-store precautions to help prioritize safety. This includes mandatory facial coverings for partners and partner check-ins, which requires all partners to take their temperature ahead of each shift.

Customers, now more than ever, are seeking familiar and convenient experiences, and Starbucks has continued to adapt its operations to meet those needs. Starting today, effective immediately, Starbucks will close access to its cafés and move to drive-thru and delivery only. Some exceptions will be made for those cafés serving in or around hospitals and health care centers in the company’s efforts to serve first responders, health care workers, and their incredible support staff. 

Starbucks Canada president Lori Digulla made the announcement in a letter to all partners today. “Thank you so much for all you’re doing, and above all else know that all our decisions are balancing partner and customer care, with science and facts, to serve our communities in the most impactful way we can as long as it is safe to do so,” she wrote.

Thank you again for our conversation yesterday. As we discussed, the magnitude of managing through this situation is the single biggest challenge many of us have faced in our lifetime. We are continually reviewing our partner support and operations and making decisions daily to ensure we’re responding to the changes we’re seeing and experiencing across the country. Thank you for your flexibility, your engagement, your on-the-ground insights, as well as the feedback you share. Today, we have some important new information about additional steps we are taking to support you, our customers and our communities. 

Let me be clear: We are now more than ever committed to our Mission and values and the communities we serve. Just as we have for nearly 50 years, Starbucks will always make the courageous decisions, even if they're difficult ones. And today, those decisions are rooted in facts and science, partner care as a priority and the reality of how challenging it is to focus on every partner and our communities (now and throughout this crisis) while navigating this on a store by store, minute by minute, community by community basis across this vast country. 

Closing Cafés and Going to Drive-Thru &amp; Delivery Only

Since the onset of the outbreak, we’ve worked to exceed public health requirements by taking actions in our cafés like expanding sanitizing and cleaning processes, and removing furniture to reduce risk and create the safest environments we can for partners who want to come to work. Importantly, we removed our seating and moved to a take-out, Drive Thru and MOP service only, to support social distancing. Even so, we’ve all recognized over the last week the challenges and complexities of trying to reduce “social gathering” in our cafés even as we removed furniture and reduced our services to grab n go. While we have worked hard to exceed any public health requirements, our cafés in some areas are experiencing high traffic during moments of the day and we need to do more to prevent the spread of this virus. It has also become apparent how time intensive it is for everyone to manage the entire country in this way, causing too much time to be pointed at operational changes and schedule management rather than providing even more partner care in a more holistic way, and leveraging our size and our scale to help our communities and our country in even more impactful ways. Today, we are making the decision to close access to our café’s altogether for two weeks and limiting our services to drive thru and delivery only. Some exceptions will be made for those cafes serving in or around hospitals and health care centers in our efforts to serve first responders, health care workers, and their incredible support team. These changes apply to our company-owned stores, and our licensed partners will make decisions for their properties.

Partners will still be paid for the next month, even if you choose to stay home

We will expand the Catastrophe Pay support we <a href="https://stories.starbucks.ca/en/stories/2020/further-extension-of-partner-care-during-covid-19/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="announced just yesterday (opens in a new tab)">announced just yesterday</a>. We want to underscore that any partner serving in our stores that remain open are there because they want to be there to serve their community at this time. If you feel you’re taking a risk by coming to work or fear carrying the virus, please stay home. To guarantee that partners feel completely empowered to make that choice, we are going to pay all partners for their shifts over the next 30 days, whether you choose to work or not.

Supporting First Responders, Health Care Workers, and the Communities We Serve

We don’t believe lattes are “essential.” But in times of crisis, the government asks convenient food and beverage outlets to remain open when possible for pick up, drive-thru, or delivery. Cafes, gas stations, and other take out and convenience stores are part of a support system that offsets the pressure that is already high on grocery stores. This is especially important to serve thousands of first responders and health care workers who are on the front line, which is why our stores in or around hospitals, or communities with limited food options, will remain open with partners who are explicitly choosing to continue to serve. 

We will continue to work very closely with local, provincial, and the federal government to continually assess how best to stay open, stay safe and be a part of the solution during this time. 

I appreciate all of your incredible commitment to each other and your desire to serve our communities, to create best moments and desperately needed points of connection. We are just evolving our approach to do it in a different way.

This is a crisis that is moving quickly, and we need to stay ahead of it and do our part, recognizing this is often confusing, frustrating and dynamic. Where’s your favourite coffee spot? Perhaps it would be overlooking a volcano in Costa Rica. Or under the shade of palm trees on a beach in Mallorca. It could be a bustling spot full of the sights and sounds of roasting coffee, or a place where you don’t need to make a sound at all. Here’s a start to your 2020 resolutions with 20 unique Starbucks stores to visit in the new year.

1. Tenerife, Spain

Let’s now hop across the Atlantic to Tenerife, the largest of the four Spanish Canary Islands, located west of the coast of Morocco. The <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/1020454/puerto-de-la-cruz-edificio-casa-miranda-calle-santo-domingo-13-santa" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Puerto de la Cruz store</a> was beautifully designed to be in keeping with the building’s 18th century architecture and is situated near El Muelle Beach, one of Tenerife’s many famous black volcanic beaches.

2. Palma de Mallorca, Spain

If one beautiful Spanish destination has you yearning for another one, then continue on another 2,000 kilometers northeast to the majestic island of Mallorca (or Majorca). At the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/emea/stories/2017/starbucks-unveils-two-brand-new-stores-in-hot-european-holiday-destinations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Sometimes Mallorca</a> store on Palma Beach, the open plan makes the most of the sunny weather while timber flooring and wooden features give the space a modern feel. Connecting the sheltered indoor area with the terrace is a semi-transparent screen so customers can enjoy the glorious sunsets across the Mediterranean Sea, even when inside.

Paris is always a good idea, and an unmatched destination to ring in the new decade. The Starbucks store at <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/1005179/place-du-tertre-8-10-rue-norvins-paris-j-75018-fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Place du Tetre</a>, located in the neighborhood of Montmartre, is a cozy space to rest and recharge after climbing the steps to Sacre-Coeur Basilica. You’ll find the former cabaret tucked away in an 18th century stone building on the quiet cobblestone Rue de Norvins.

The Maltese capital of Valletta is known for its colourful doors, which for centuries stood as beacons for sea traders crisscrossing the Mediterranean. Behind a lime green one you’ll find the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/1024842/valletta-waterfront-valletta-waterfront-floriana-09-frn-1913-mt" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Valletta Waterfront</a> store in Floriana, the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/emea/stories/2019/starbucks-welcomes-first-customers-in-malta/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">first Starbucks location in the island-state of Malta</a>. The store was designed to reflect Valletta’s heritage as a trading hub with wood, marble and dark, sophisticated finishes that contrast with the lighter stone façade of the city’s iconic waterfront.

Travel east to Southeast Asia, and you’ll find the city of Bangkok shimmering on the Gulf of Thailand. The Starbucks store at <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/asia/stories/2018/starbucks-opens-reserve-bar-store-to-celebrate-20-years-in-thailand/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">CentralWorld</a> is Thailand’s largest, a celebration of 20 years in the country. The store features a Starbucks Reserve coffee bar and, for the first time in Asia, Starbucks beverages infused with nitrogen including Nitro Peach Tea, Nitro Green Tea Latte, Nitro Caramel Macchiato and Nitro Flat White.

Journey another 1,300 kilometers northeast across Thailand and Laos to reach the historic capital city of Hanoi, Vietnam. You’ll feel right at home at the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/1021705/duy-tan-32-duy-tan-cau-giay-dist-32-34-duy-tan-qu%E1%BA%ADn-c%E1%BA%A7u-gi" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Duy Tan</a> store, a two-storey former residence nestled between two towering office buildings. The location contrasts old and new, with original brickwork alongside modern chevron wood cladding.

Just a little over 3,300 kilometers south of the Asian continent, just below the equator, is the Indonesian island of Bali and the home of one of Starbucks most unique coffee experiences. At the <a href="http://dewata.starbucks.co.id/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Dewata Coffee Sanctuary</a>, coffee is not only sipped, but also grown as a tribute to the role that Indonesia plays in the world of coffee. The design pays homage to Indonesia culture as well with hand-carved stone tiles that create the ornate floor and wall design, while traditional local crafts were reimagined into patterns to reflect a modern interpretation of coffee flowers and coffee beans.

8. Hualien County, Taiwan

Inspired by the foliage of coffee trees and the geometry of the traditional Chinese bucket arch, renowned architect Kengo Kuma created a striking design for the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/1022922/hualienbay-no-505-sec-1-nanbin-rd-hualien-county-hua-97356-tw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Hualien Bay</a> store on the coast of Hualien County, Taiwan. Kuma, who also built Japan’s <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2014/kengo-kuma-on-designing-an-iconic-starbucks-store-in-dazaifu-japan/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Fukuoka store</a> and was the exterior architect for the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2019/top-10-things-to-know-about-the-starbucks-reserve-roastery-tokyo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo</a>, stacked 29 recycled shipping containers to create a two-storey drive-thru location filled with natural sunlight that streams through skylights carved throughout the structure. ­­­­

Head north to eastern China’s scenic Slender Lake district in Yangzhou, and you’ll discover a Starbucks designed to respect the area’s rich cultural heritage, built in the unique style of Jiannan classical Chinese architecture. Inside, the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator?map=32.390588,119.572353,9z&amp;place=Yangzhou%20Slender%20West%20Lake%20Culture%20Plaza" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Yangzhou Slender West Lake Culture Plaza</a> location is just as stunning, with an elevated Starbucks Reserve™ coffee experience in the open first floor. Meanwhile, customers relaxing in the second floor’s seating area can enjoy the exposed wood structure from inside the beautiful pitched roof.

Further north, about 320 kilometers (or a 30 minute high-speed passenger train ride) from Beijing is the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2019/starbucks-preserves-heritage-site-in-china-to-open-flagship-location-in-tianjin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Tianjin Riverside 66 store</a>. Originally a bank building constructed in 1921 by a renowned Chinese architect, it took three years for Starbucks to preserve the building’s original architecture and restore it to its full splendor, while infusing modern and creative elements that complement and give new life to the space. Highlights include a Renaissance-style façade, an expansive dome with imported marble columns, and local Chinese carvings. The original bank counters have also been fully preserved, allowing customers a peek into what a bank from a century ago looked and felt like.

It may be just 40 minutes from Tokyo, but the town of Kawagoe feels a world away. Located in Saitama Prefecture, the <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/1020891/kawagoe-kanetsuki-dori-15-18-saiwaicho-kawagoe-11-350-0063-jp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Kawagoe Kanetsuki-dori</a> store in the traditional city district retains the historic feeling of the 18th-century Edo era. It echoes the traditional architecture of the period, with a wood latticed exterior made from locally grown cedar and a traditional tile roof. Take a seat inside near the glass front doors for the best people watching or relax out on the terrace near the store’s Japanese-style garden and listen for the chimes of the Toki no Kane (bell tower) nearby.

Zig-zag about 3,200 kilometers due west of Turks &amp; Caicos and you’ll arrive at the historic city of Guadalajara in western Mexico’s province of Jalisco. The <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/5035/andares-blvd-puerta-de-hierrro-no-4965-loc-up-17-k-1-esq-g" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Andares store</a> is a juxtaposition of Guadalajara’s natural earthy tones contrasting with the local, vibrant, whimsical crafts that adorn the region’s brightly coloured shopfronts and carts. Local artisans contributed special details, including the handcrafted borlas that adorn the ceiling to create a colourful ceiling feature.

15. Chapalita Oriente, Mexico

Just eight kilmeters from Guadalajara’s Plaza Andares is the town of <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/5097/chapalita-guadalajara-av-guadalupe-no-1550-col-chapalita-guadalajara-jal" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Chapalita Oriente</a>. Venture north to Toronto for a beautiful exploration of coffee. <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/store-locator/store/1020688/cf-shops-at-don-mills-6-pabst-lane-toronto-on-m-3-c-0-h-4-ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">The CF Shops at Don Mills</a> store features Toronto’s first Starbucks Reserve coffee bar with a wrap-around bar crafted in Canadian walnut taking centre stage. Here customers can converse with baristas as they watch their coffee brew using any number of methods like Black Eagle, Clover, Chemex and pour-over.

A Starbucks Reserve™ Roastery is a must-see destination for any Starbucks fan, as it’s an immersive celebration of coffee and craft with small batches of coffee roasted onsite.
