In 2022, Statistics Canada , shared that 16.9% of Canadians were food insecure, compared with 12.9% in 2021. Overall, the proportion of individuals in households experiencing food insecurity has increased by 5.3 percentage points from 2018 to 2022.

As part of our promises  to give more than we take from the planet and contribute positively to the communities we serve, we are on a mission to divert food from waste streams and help alleviate hunger in the communities we serve.

Our hunger relief strategies are aimed at reducing the amount of food that goes to waste, donating nutritious unsold food, investing in food rescue infrastructure globally, and supporting long term improvements in food security in areas connected to our value chain .

Our Food Donation Journey

In 2018, Starbucks partners (employees) advocated for a program that would allow stores to donate unsold food to people facing hunger and food insecurity in communities across Canada.

Today, Starbucks FoodShare is a pinnacle food rescue program with a national effort across 100% of our company-operated stores. In partnership with Second Harvest Food Rescue and other hunger-relief organizations, our stores provide nourishing, ready-to-eat meals to people in need and divert surplus food from landfills.

Through our FoodShare program, Second Harvest connects each of our company-operated stores to a local community service provider. At the end of each day, Starbucks partners gather surplus food for donation, which is then picked up by a local community service provider. From there, donations are shared with community members through food banks, community kitchens, and other food related support programs.

Starbucks FoodShare Food Donation Program

Our FoodShare Food Donation Program supports hunger relief in communities across Canada.

Our Starbucks FoodShare program launched in 2018 at select stores in Ontario, Canada in response to partner feedback. Since then, we have scaled up the FoodShare program with 100% of all company operated stores participating through individual or recurring donations to local community service providers.

Since our national launch in 2021, our stores continue to support their local FoodShare charitable partners through other community activations including in-store food donation drives, nominating their food rescue partner for a Neighborhood Grant, and more.

International Hunger Relief Efforts

Starbucks supports hunger relief efforts around the world through a variety of initiatives including The Starbucks Foundation’s Global Community Impact Grants, partner volunteering and disaster relief grants.
